An "unusual" recording including the lesser-known Piano Sonatas D. 566 and D. 613, alongside other delightful pieces.
The Piano Sonata in E Major, D. 566, showcases Schubert's early mastery of the piano sonata form. Composed in 1817, this sonata brims with youthful exuberance and melodic charm. From the elegant grace of the opening Allegro moderato to the playful buoyancy of the Scherzo and Trio, this sonata captivates with its melodic inventiveness and harmonic richness. The Adagio offers a moment of tender introspection before the exhilarating finale brings the work to a triumphant close.
The Piano Sonata in A Major, D. 613, stands as a testament to Schubert's development as a composer. Composed in 1818, this sonata exhibits a more mature style, characterized by greater harmonic complexity and emotional depth. The opening Allegro moderato unfolds with a sense of grandeur and expansiveness, leading into the introspective Adagio, where Schubert's lyrical gift shines brightly. The Menuetto and Trio offer a contrast of light and shade, while the spirited Allegro vivace brings the sonata to a dazzling conclusion.
In addition to the sonatas, this recording features a selection of other piano works by Schubert, including the charming D. 346, D. 348, and D. 349, as well as the hauntingly beautiful Allegretto, D. 900.
Giuseppe Bruno delivers a compelling interpretation of these piano works, bringing out their inherent beauty, lyricism, and emotional depth. With exquisite touch and sensitive phrasing, Bruno captures the essence of Schubert's music, inviting listeners into a world of profound musical expression and exploration.
With this latest album, the complete set of sonatas by the Austrian composer concludes, an immense undertaking carried out with great conviction and careful study by the Ligurian pianist Giuseppe Bruno.
